our new dc home: the kitchen

Thursday, June 25, 2009

i have lots of photos of our new place to share.
i'll start with the kitchen.

i attached before and after photos to give you a little idea
of what i did. i knew the kitchen had a lot of potential
so i was most excited to start with it when we moved in.

i used black chalk board paint behind the counters
to tie in the black counter tops and make the ugly florescent lights
under the cabinets less noticeable.

and i painted the walls a bright exotic red
to go along with our red kitchen appliances.
we love our old retro oven/stove!
and the white shutter doors open to an old retro washer/dryer!

i think my favorite thing about the kitchen is this polaroid
we put up on the cabinet from new york.

my second favorite thing are these two old license plates
i searched and searched for a new york plate,
but florida and utah are appropriate
since they are where husband and i are originally from.

and that, folks... is our new kitchen.

Love the red! It really gives it some class! Plus, you can NEVER go wrong with chalkboard paint.

Are you two renting or did you buy? If renting, I'm surprised you were able to paint! Lucky you! ;)

It's amazing how you changed a plain old room into a gorgeous work of art. It's a place to not only cook delicious food, but to hang out and totally enjoy yourself while you do it. Well done!

Don't you LOVE making a new home your own?! It's so much fun. The previous owner of our new home was a set designer, and made his own cabinets in the kitchen. Plexiglass, no doors, cabinets. But with a little brown paint, and painting the lower cabinets grey, it came out nicely! We're furnishing/decorating room by room. Master and master bath is next! WHOO!

Brittan said...

Um, yeah, that's brilliant. I love it! I love when a room has little subtle personal touches that reflect the people who live there.

If you go on ebay, you can get vintage license plates; I saw some New York ones on there, and they're not too spendy!
Do you ever wonder what cars they were on before? I do. They're so fun.
