our weekend with irene.

well, irene didn't exactly stop by our house like she said she would this weekend on her little tour of the east coast. rude!

we did get a bit of rain and wind saturday night, but the power remained on, everything stayed in place and all seemed normal the following morning besides a few tree limbs down here and there. is it terrible of me to admit i feel a bit cheated with my first hurricane experience? but no no, i know, i know. i really am glad d.c. stayed safe, and that irene wasn't as bad as predicted for us in dc. i hope everyone and their loved ones are safe... i know other areas weren't as lucky as ours and we're praying for all affected...

we spent our weekend inside. we read lots of books to eleanor, watched lots of movies thanks to netflix, ate lots of unhealthy food (irene was the best excuse for ice cream sandwiches for breakfast or peanut m&m's at midnight). it was quite nice. we love finding reasons to stay inside as a family all weekend long and just be together. thanks for being a good excuse, irene.

a few days ago, our first earthquake. and tomorrow, a hurricane?

Friday, August 26, 2011

we've got our water, flash lights, and i've got the house stock piled with lots of sugary treats (duh.) also, i just bungee corded my trash cans to the fence out back.

not-so-lady-like irene, bring it.
everyone else, stay safe!

a painting...

do you remember this cute picture of eleanor reading i snapped a few weeks ago with my iphone? well look at what the talented paul ferney painted for us to kick off a new round of the commission project!

paul and jordan (who you know as the talent and genius behind oh happy day) have found a way to make art a little more accessible, and just in time for the holidays. you send in a photo of anything you'd like, and he'll turn it into a beautiful oil painting.

click here to learn more about the commission project and click here to purchase your painting.

thanks again, paul!

p.s. i was a lovely lady this week over on emma robertson's gorgeous blog. thanks to emma for including me with such a sweet batch of lovely ladies!

playing bride + groom.

Thursday, August 25, 2011

way back in april, josh and i got to play bride and groom for photographer anne robert at the most beautiful private estate in middleburg virginia. in addition to anne, kelley and carla were also the brains behind this pretty photo shoot and those beautiful flowers i'm holding were arranged by holly.

while i didn't want to pass up an opportunity to run around in a wedding dress for the afternoon (i mean, hello!) i was nervous how it'd all go down since eleanor was only a few months old. but that sweet baby of mine must have been having a really terrific day because she didn't make a peep the entire time! i was such a proud mama! and it was fun josh and me to walk down memory lane again...

i sort of wish you could have a wedding every year... same groom... just different dress, different spread, different flowers.... you know? ;) celebrating love is such a wonderful thing.

thanks again to anne for having us come play! you can see more of the images featured here on the southern weddings blog.

have one of these cute hats finally fit said baby.
needless to say, i'm a happy mama over here today.
also, i would like you to note that look! i cleaned! ;)

hilton head island, part III

Monday, August 22, 2011

and here are the last few photos
i thought i'd share from our weekend away.

p.s. right after this first photo below was taken,
eleanor put a handful of sand into her mouth.
i felt like a really good mother.

see the first and second posts here and here.

p.s. i feel the need to state we were not the genius'
behind the sand castle pictured. although i wish. isn't it beautiful?

a few more photos from our weekend with the family at the beach...

see the first recap post here.

hilton head island, part I

a few photos from our weekend with josh's parents
at hilton head island, south carolina....

  • our favorite part of the trip was biking everywhere together each day.
  • we tried what we think is the world's best seafood chowder. so much so, we went again for a second bowl. (it was from here.)
  • we got caught in the rain one night on a bike ride to dinner. we biked home in the dark only seeing the bike path via the occasional scattered lightening bolt (scary.)
  • eleanor tried to eat sand probably one hundred times.
  • these days i can't seem to get any sun, but i'm turing into one big freckle. :/
  • the water temperature was 86 degrees! it sort of made me want to become a mermaid and never get out of the water.
  • sand in diapers is so annoying.
  • i think i'm happiest when i'm by the ocean. and i think we're going to need to reevaluate our life plan so it can somehow require us to live on the beach forever and ever. ;)

thanks for letting us crash your stay, ma + pa.
we love you both!

diary by kingsley: my family went to the beach without me, their A+ pup.

Thursday, August 18, 2011

"hi friends,

mom keeps saying they would have taken me along if i was allowed to fly during hot summer months (stupid airlines and their policies against snub-nosed dog breeds). i mean, we all know how much i love the beach (see here and here and here).

but to be honest, i think i got the better end of the deal. i spent 10 hours every day playing with my doggy friends while the family was away. mom and dad were able to check in with me on the webcam and i even got an A+ on my report card from doggy day care. mom couldn't believe it when she picked me up (she has a hard time letting go of memories like this and this -- someone please help her forget already.)

love, kingsley

ruby jane taylor.

Wednesday, August 17, 2011

a friend of mine recently shared the story of little ruby jane taylor with me. ruby was born in january and fought a couragous battle with liver failure since march. i learned she passed away a few days ago which breaks my heart. she and eleanor are practically the same age. i can't imagine losing my baby girl. it makes me cry just thinking about it. my heart goes out to ruby's family and loved ones and pray they find strength and peace during this difficult time.

if you feel so inclined, please keep them in your prayers as well. also, there is an auction going on here until monday, to help with the medical expenses of ruby's prior care. more information here.

please hug your loved ones tonight. show and tell them how much they mean to you. life is too short to put if off until tomorrow.
