my grandma b. (far left in photo of the three ladies).

over christmas break while at my parents house, i went through a huge box of old photos of my mother's parents. i was really close with both my grandma and grandpa b... they lived with my family for a number of years towards the end of their lives and i'm grateful i got to grow up around them. i wish i would have taken advantage of that experience more, now that they have passed. fortunately my mother is great at keeping track of their journals, photos, stories and ancestry. but it's still not the same as sitting across the dinner table from them each night listening to their stories. i really miss them a lot.

while looking through these photographs, i couldn't get over what a stylish and beautiful woman my grandmother was. goodness gracious, where are those clothes? and why can't we wear hats like that everyday today? ;)

Hi Naomi,

that dress in the first picture is absolutely wonderful.

I find this post interesting because just recently my Great Grandmother (or Muumuu as we call her) passed away. When our family got together, all of her old journals and photo albums were laid out and I completely lost myself in her words and photos. They had absolutely NO money so my Muumuu made all of her clothes and I thought the exact same thing... so much style it looked like she was living first class but really it was the opposite. So interesting. And the words she had to say in her journal were so interesting because times were SO different. She talked about how it was such a treat to be able to go to the movies with my Papa and be able to stop at the diner and split toast afterwards. So interesting.

Beautiful! I do wish the priority to "dress" will return. It makes all the difference in ones day...our ancestors knew, and did it so effortlessly.

Those photographs are awesome! I love old snapshots. And I totally agree about the hats, maybe Kate Middleton will continue to bring them back into fashion and not just amongst the royals.

naomi - you have her style and grace my dear.

she is indeed a stunning woman, you were so lucky to be that close with her for the time you had.

my maternal grandmother is now 99 and although she has to live in a nursing home for her health she is in the best spirits these days and full of life.

my paternal grandmother is much younger and still able to live in her home.

I truly wish we lived closer to both of them, but one is more then a 5 hour drive and the other is more then 8 hours... I need to visit them both more often.

my husband's nana is 98 and living in Ireland - still as feisty as ever!

there are strong women in my family - i'm so lucky to be surrounded by their stories.

Hi Naomi,

It's amazing how women in your family all look look like each other! And I can even see the same traces on little E. You're all beautiful and stylish women! ;)
Great photos! My granpa' passed 4 months ago and I know exactly how you feel when you say you should've spared some more time to spend with your grandparents. I'm yet to get over the fact that I'm able to live without my granpa (he used to live with me and my parents). It's so heartbreaking.

Love to see that your mom somehow keeps your granparents' memories alive. I love every single picture!

Wow, women really knew how to dress well back in the day. It's so important to talk about the loved ones that are no longer here so we can pass down the stories to our little ones. Thank you for sharing. I adore these kinds of posts. :)

WHAT a gem of a find!! How neat is that?! I know what you mean, I absolutely LOVE the style of this era, SO feminine and elegant! And how great that your grandparents got to live with you for awhile!! I wish I could spend more time with mine, they are all alive but one grandpa. Sadly, I live in Texas, and one pair lives in central Illinois and my other grandma lives in Nebraska! :( Grandparents are SUCH a treasure, I realize that more and more as I get older! :)

I just love these photos! I wish my grandmother had kept her old clothes as well. They are so beautiful. I have a picture of my parents on their wedding day. My mom is wearing a camel suit with fur trim and brown leather gloves and a pillbox hat, and she looks so beautiful. I wish I could dress that way every day, but with 3 kids at home and nowhere to go, it's not really practical.

It's not hard to see where you get your looks and style Naomi - the first photo in particular is a stunner!

Grandparents are such special gifts in our lives and for you to have spent time with yours is something to be truly treasured.

Last year I received a special blogging gift from the clever ladies at Koolamon Designs to remember my grandparents. It's a gorgeous silver circle necklace with each of their names stamped around the edge. I wear it almost every day to remember the four amazing people who conceived my parents and who were such a huge source of love and guidance.

Happy day - great post!

What a wonderful post. I was lucky enough to live with my grandparents for the first 6-8 years of my life, and I still have fond memories of lying in bed with my grandmother while she told me stories about growing up in Rhodesia. I can also remember the songs she used to sing me ...

My grandmother went to a dress shop by herself after work one night and bought her wedding dress. She looked like a silver screen goddess! Women today want everything to be so comfy and casual. The ladies from years past embraced the formality in clothing which makes them seem so stylish to us now. How stylish are skinny jeans, boots, and a long top?
